You wake up, your body feels heavy and you don’t feel like rolling out your mat. What to do?

Yesterday I was listening to the Yoga Revealed podcast with Eddie Modestini. He’s been practicing for over 30 years and studied with the great teachers of our time such as Pattabhi Jois and B.K.S. Iyengar. The topic of the podcast was about how to incorporate yoga in your life. He shared a quote from Iyengar that struck me.

In a Q&A, Iyengar was asked: “what do you do when you wake up and you don’t feel like practicing?

The days I don’t want to practice, I quiet myself and I think of 1 yoga pose. I go into my yoga room and do that one pose and usually that leads me to another pose. That’s the radiance of the practice, it brings you to the next step. If it doesn’t, if I still don’t feel like doing the pose, then at least I did a practice as I did that 1 pose.

Keep in mind that Iyengar was notorious for staying in poses for extremely long periods of time, so he could easily have done a 30 minute practice with one pose, for real. With that being said, there’s a lot we can learn from this statement.

For me, this has been the way I developed a personal home yoga practice throughout the years.

By making sure I have a dedicated space in my home to do yoga.

Sometimes I even roll out the yoga mat the night before so I’m reminded to do my practice.

Then I step on the mat and close my eyes. I tune in and feel what comes up. Sometimes I want to sit down, flex the spine and meditate longer. The other day I feel like doing sun salutations and creating heat in the body.

What is important, is that you create time for yourself before you open the inbox, before you start working and even before you eat. By breathing deeply and moving your body.

Especially when you don’t feel like doing it.
